Wegovy is what’s known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It is the body’s natural hormonal response to food and plays a major role in insulin secretion and production. Wegovy works by stimulating the GLP-1 receptor to increase feelings of fullness, decrease appetite and reduce gastric emptying, all leading to weight loss.
Appetite suppression is one of Wegovy’s main roles. By acting on certain brain circuits that regulate hunger, Wegovy lowers food intake, so it is easier to maintain a calorie deficit. Also, the drug slows gastric emptying, so food stays in the stomach longer and one feels sated for a more extended period.
Wegovy is a semaglutide, which has been studied to treat type 2 diabetes. Both drugs have the same active ingredient, but Wegovy is a higher dose not just a reformulation of Ozempic for weight loss, but is itself approved for weight management. The ultra-high dose of Wegovy is what makes it especially powerful at suppressing appetite for weight loss in non-diabetes patients.
Wegovy usually starts reducing appetite in the first week of treatment. Most patients notice a decreased appetite, especially between meals. But the effect on appetite regulation in full might take a bit longer to make itself known. Make sure to discuss proper expectations with your doctor.

There, that increased dose will cut that side effect to almost zero and ensure the medication works for you in helping you lose weight. The dose escalation needs to be closely monitored as it might lead to potential serious side effects as you continue the treatment.
While patients may see some immediate weight loss within a few weeks, most significant weight is lost 3 months following surgery. At this point patients are already down 5-10% of their starting body weight, and most if not all the weight comes off between 3 and 6 months. Such clinical trials report that patients can lose 15% of their body weight within 12 months, particularly if they are supported by new life habits. Take note that this may vary depending on your physical condition and other medical factor.

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same medication semaglutide —but Wegovy is approved only for weight loss, so it was expected to have a more pronounced impact on appetite and calorie intake.
